This contemporary Phad painting by Kalyan Joshi departs from massive, sprawling epics and moves to celebrating leisure, nature and shared companionship. In this composition, a traditional epic canvas is seamlessly adapted to document a tranquil, modern-day picnic beneath the shade of a tree.

Phad painting is a vibrant, 700-year-old scroll painting tradition originating from the Bhilwara region of Rajasthan. Traditionally executed on long sheets of hand-woven cloth (phad), these paintings functioned as mobile temples. Priest-singers (Bhopas) would travel from village to village, unfurling the scrolls at night and singing tales of folk deities like Pabuji and Devnarayan.

This artwork features a female and a male seated face-to-face on a beautifully patterned picnic mat. Both figures are captured mid-conversation, their hands raised in expressive gestures. In classic Phad style, they are drawn with large, fish-shaped eyes, sharp noses and rounded jaws, their gazes locking together to establish a strong narrative connection.

The figures are dressed in a mix of patterns that bridges traditional textile design with modern casual wear. The woman, seated gracefully on the left with her legs swept back, wears a top dotted with small circles and striped trousers. The man, sitting cross-legged on the right, wears a vertically striped tunic with a solid yellow collar line with pants. Both characters are adorned with golden ornaments, including circular kundal earrings, matching armlets and stacked bangles that frame their active hand gestures.

Their shared picnic setup is meticulously laid out across a mat patterned with a delicate crisscross grid and small black dots, enclosed by a fine golden fringe. Resting on the mat between them are two small golden tumblers, a small bowl and a vintage-style portable radio. Sheltering them on the left is a stylized, textured tree with a dense canopy of tightly clustered foliage.

The artwork utilizes a deep red backdrop that fills the open landscape, creating a dramatic color contrast that pushes the clothing, golden elements and canopy forward. The framing remains intentionally minimal and contemporary with a crisp, solid black border. This deliberate boundary acts as a visual window, directing total focus onto this charming, quiet symphony of modern life captured through historic folk-art techniques.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.

• The order contains more than two different product types.
