In this striking Kalighat painting, Hasir Chitrakar reimagines Lord Mahavir Swami, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, with the signature elegance of the Kalighat Paintings. Originating in 19th-century Bengal, Kalighat paintings are known for their bold brushwork, expressive figures, and satirical depictions of mythology, everyday life, and social themes. The Tirthankara stands tall and composed upon a vivid pink lotus, symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, his emerald-green skin rendered in soft gradations that echo the serene detachment of the liberated soul. His body is adorned with fine white linework that forms sacred thread-like patterns, while his gaze remains calm, intense, and inward-looking, a portrayal of deep meditation. Behind his head, fans out a magnificent hood of cobra heads, a motif commonly associated with divine protection and enlightenment in Jain iconography.
Flanking him on either side are naga figures, half-human, half-serpent devotees, each respectfully postured with folded hands or ornamented arms, their snake tails coiling gently into the composition. Their presence evokes a mythical guardianship, drawing from the Jain legend of Dharnendra and Padmavati protecting Mahavir during his penance.
The painting is set against a minimal ochre background that accentuates the divine figures, while the mat texture beneath the artwork nods subtly to the earthy roots of folk expression. Hasir Chitrakar’s clean lines, muted yet luminous palette, and symmetrical composition bring together spiritual symbolism and folk artistry in an image that is both reverent and visually arresting.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
