About the Artwork +
This striking Kalighat painting by artist Hasir Chitrakar portrays Radha and Krishna on a swing, surrounded by gopis. Originating in 19th-century Bengal, Kalighat paintings are known for their bold brushwork, expressive figures, and satirical depictions of mythology, everyday life, and social themes.
At the heart of the composition, Radha and Krishna sit entwined on a richly adorned swing, their figures brimming with affection and quiet joy. Lord Krishna’s blue-toned form contrasts beautifully with Radha’s warm complexion, their gazes locked in a timeless communion. The swing, suspended from a grand flowering tree, sways gently amid a gathering of adoring companions. The scene unfolds beneath a canopy of golden-brown and green foliage, dotted with delicate white flowers. The sprawling tree, with its graceful branches and pair of owls, adds a sense of majesty.
Around the divine couple, gopis stand in graceful postures, serving them, carrying fans and admiring them, clad in traditional saris of pink, green and ivory, adorned with fine white detailing. A cow, the divine companion and vahana of Lord Krishna, decorated with an ornamental cloth, peeks from behind the group, accompanied by a Gopa (cow herd).
The background glows with warm golden hues and stylized floral vines, while the earth beneath is lined with leafy textures and patches of green. The bold outlines and vibrant colors characteristic to the Kalighat style blend folk aesthetics with a narrative style. This painting is a tribute to the divine love of Radha and Krishna, transporting the viewer to the joyous reverence of Vrindavan through every brushstroke.
