About the Artwork +
In this striking Kalighat painting by Hasir Chitrakar, three revered avatars of the Vaishnav tradition, Lord Rama, Balarama and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, are unified in a singular divine form, signifying their shared spiritual essence as emanations of Lord Vishnu. Originating in 19th-century Bengal, Kalighat paintings are known for their bold brushwork, expressive figures and satirical depictions of mythology, everyday life, and social themes.
At the heart of the composition, with a poised, symmetrical stance and commanding presence, the figure radiates devotion and dharma, evoking the enduring ideals of compassion, strength and divine love. Rendered with vibrant reds, ochres and greens, the central figure stands atop a blooming lotus, a symbol of purity and divine birth. The six-armed form holds distinct attributes that mark the divine lineage: a bow and quiver of arrows for Lord Rama, the plough (hal) and mace for Balarama, representing strength and agricultural abundance and the water pot and raised hand of kīrtana associated with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the embodiment of ecstatic devotion to Krishna. His forehead bears the prominent white tilaka, a sacred Vaishnav symbol that ties these three forms into one seamless divine manifestation. The attire is a blend of sacred iconography, Lord Rama’s royal dhoti with floral motifs, Balarama’s forest-dweller cloak, and the ascetic elegance of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s garb, all harmonized in the fluid Kalighat brushwork style, with sweeping lines and subtle detailing. This composite form is not just a visual blend but a theological one, drawing from the Bhagavata Purana and Vaishnava tradition where all three figures are seen as different manifestations of the same supreme divinity.
The painting becomes an invocation of bhakti, devotion that transcends form, time and narrative, celebrating the interconnected avatars of Vishnu who continue to shape the spiritual imagination of India, making it a unique and sacred addition to any space.
