This one-of-a-kind Madhubani painting by Izhar Ansari represents a fascinating tribute to the surrealist master Salvador Dalí. The artwork seamlessly blends the structured linework of the Mithila tradition with the dreamlike imagery of European surrealism, specifically referencing Dalí’s famous melting clocks from his iconic painting "The Persistence of Memory."
The central focus is a stylized portrait of Dalí, rendered with the characteristic Madhubani features of large, almond-shaped eyes and a long, elegant neck. His iconic upturned mustache is a focal point, mirroring the fluid, organic curves found throughout the piece. Dalí is depicted wearing a highly textured suit, where the artist has used dense vertical Katchni lines and intricate stippling to create different fabric weights and patterns, showcasing a mastery of monochromatic detail.
Surrounding the figure are seven "melting" clocks, each uniquely distorted and floating against a blue background filled with repetitive wavy lines. These clocks are outlined with thick white borders and fine black hatching, a technique that gives them a luminous, three-dimensional quality despite the two-dimensional nature of the folk style. By reimagining a global art icon through the lens of ancient Indian folk techniques, Izhar Ansari demonstrates the versatility and contemporary relevance of the Madhubani tradition.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics.
