In this surreal and imaginative Kalighat work, the artist presents a vibrant forest scene that blurs the boundaries between the natural and the sentient. Originating in 19th-century Kolkata, Kalighat art is traditionally known for its bold, rhythmic lines and its ability to infuse even the most mundane or mythical subjects with a sense of vitality and personality.
The composition is anchored by a group of towering trees whose foliage forms the shape of human-like faces. These trees, complete with expressive eyes, noses, and mouths, suggest a forest that is conscious and watching. A monkey is perched actively on a central trunk, while a whimsical tiger, notable for its long, striped snake-like tail—emerges from between the roots and the undergrowth. This fusion of animal traits is a hallmark of folk storytelling, where the forest is a place of magic and transformation.
At the base of the scene, a blue river flows through the twisted roots of the trees, filled with brightly colored, patterned fish. Above, the sky is a flurry of activity, crowded with numerous birds in flight, their wings rendered with the same intricate cross-hatching and vibrant washes seen throughout the forest floor. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
