In this elaborate Kalighat composition, artist Sonali Chitrakar creates a dense, rhythmic vision of a forest gathering, where a diverse assembly of wildlife exists in a state of watchful harmony. Originating in 19th-century Kolkata, the Kalighat style is renowned for its bold, sweeping outlines and vibrant folk energy, which the artist here uses to weave a complex narrative of the natural world. The composition is anchored by a central tree that serves as the heart of the forest. On its branches, two peacocks are perched with their feathers rendered in intricate patterning, while beneath the protective canopy, two elephants stand as symbols of strength and wisdom. This vertical axis establishes a sense of order within the sprawling wilderness.
The surrounding landscape is a vibrant tableau of life, featuring a balanced hierarchy of predators and prey. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
