About the Artwork +
This vibrant Kalighat painting by Sonali Chitrakar captures the iconic Durga Puja tableau, presenting Goddess Durga enthroned at the heart of her divine family, surrounded by her four children and her consort, Lord Shiva, rendered with the bold, sweeping brushstrokes and brilliant flat colour fields characteristic of this celebrated Bengal folk tradition.
Kalighat painting is a distinctive folk art form that originated in 19th-century Kolkata near the Kalighat Kali Temple, evolving from temple scroll painting into a fast, semi-mass-produced devotional and satirical art sold to pilgrims and visitors. Characterised by sweeping, calligraphic brush lines, bold unmodulated colour washes, and a deliberate flattening of form for immediate visual impact, the style was among the earliest indigenous Indian art forms to respond to print culture and urban modernity, while still rooted in mythological subject matter.
At the centre of the composition sits Goddess Durga, immediately distinguished by her tall, ornate golden crown rising into a tiered, jewel-studded peak, her deep red sari patterned with fine white floral motifs, and a third eye marked in vermilion at her brow. She wears layered necklaces of pearls and gold, large circular earrings, and a nose ring, her dark hair flowing loosely past her shoulders. Cradled in her lap is the infant form of Ganesha, depicted with his characteristic elephant head, a small trunk curling downward, large rounded ears, and a soft golden-yellow complexion, dressed in red and gold to match his mother.
To Goddess Durga's immediate left sits Goddess Saraswati, identifiable by her sage-green sari and the wooden veena she holds upright in both hands, its long fretted neck and gourd resonator carefully rendered; her serene, downcast eyes and pale complexion align with her traditional iconography as the goddess of music and learning. Beside Goddess Saraswati, closer to Goddess Durga, sits Lakshmi, draped in a pink sari with white dotted borders, adorned with the same heavy pearl jewellery, her hands folded gently in her lap in a gesture of grace and prosperity. On Goddess Durga's right is Lord Kartikeya, shown youthful with golden skin, a pink and gold dhoti-style garment, and the same elaborate jewellery, his seated posture mirroring Goddess Lakshmi's. On Durga's lap sits a young Ganesha, with his elephant head.
At the far left of the composition stands Lord Shiva, rendered with a tawny, ash-toned orange complexion signifying his ascetic nature, one arm raised in a dancing gesture, bare-chested but for layered necklaces and bangles, his lower body wrapped in a golden-yellow garment.
Along the base of the composition, the four vahanas of Durga's children are lined in a row: a white swan (Goddess Saraswati's vahana) at the far left, an owl (Goddess Lakshmi's vahana), mooshak - mouse (Lord Ganesha's vahana), and finally a peacock (Lord Kartikeya's vahana) with delicately patterned plumage, at the far right.
The entire scene is set beneath a deep teal-green backdrop, framed by a richly patterned red and gold scalloped arch dotted with small white florets, evoking a festival pandal or temple canopy, while a broad, unbleached tan-toned paper border completes the composition, lending the work the warm, handmade texture distinctive to traditional Kalighat painting on paper.
