About the Artwork +
This highly graphic and satirical vertical painting by Sonali Chitrakar revisits the famous 19th-century Kalighat tradition of using anthropomorphic animals to comment on social customs, depicting a magnificent tiger lounging comfortably while smoking a traditional hookah. Characterized by its monumental focal figures and bold contours, the composition masterfully aims to spread the message for anti-addiction and that drugs and smoking are injurious to health, through a vibrant folk lens.
Kalighat painting is a traditional art form that originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, practiced by the Patua community. It is celebrated for its sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes, bold color fills, and a unique blend of mythological themes with satirical commentary on contemporary life. Traditionally executed with water-based pigments on paper, this style is renowned for its rapid, expressive line-work and minimalistic backgrounds that emphasize the volume and dramatic expressions of the central figures.
The frame is aggressively dominated by the massive, coiled form of an orange tiger, its body curved into a near-perfect circle that fills the canvas. The tiger’s hide is a masterclass in pattern work, filled with hundreds of fine, hand-drawn black and white camouflage stripes that track the contours of its heavy paws and spine. In a brilliant twist of folk surrealism, the beast's head is transformed into a personified, bright golden-yellow sun face. The face is detailed with large, stylized Kalighat eyes, a prominent nose ring, and a red lip, surrounded by a large, radiating blue and white fine-line collar, and ornamentation to signify the parent here - Maa. The tiger uses its front paw to hold the slender pipe of a traditional sienna-brown and blue hookah stand that sits at the lower left corner.
The hookah base is intricately detailed with white zig-zag bands, its long winding pipe curving elegantly through the negative space. While the older tiger is on with her activity, she has her offspring, perched on her lap in a lighter, creamier tone. It hangs upside down its mother's lap in protest urging her to put a stop to her smoking. The stretched out leg towards the mother highlights the adamance of the offspring.
This composition is driven by the logic that, any form of drug usage is injurious to health, and when the user is a parent, it often leads to the destruction and marks the beginning of misfortune for that family, and a mother engaged in such an activity only enhances the negative outcomes. The entire whimsical animal portrait unfolds against a solid, vibrant emerald-green background that isolates the warm orange tones of the tiger, enclosed within a clean, dark charcoal outer border.
This spectacular piece serves as a pristine example of the playful, subversive wit inherent to the Kalighat heritage. By seamlessly blending the fierce, powerful form of the jungle tiger with the relaxed, luxurious habits of Bengal's 19th-century elite, Sonali Chitrakar delivers an exceptionally clean and conceptually rich masterpiece that maintains a striking modern clarity.
