Crafted by the artist Dharmendra Sutradhara, this stunning Purulia Chhau mask is a unique piece that embodies the iconic craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage of West Bengal's famous Chhau dance.
This particular mask vividly portrays the demon Mahishasura, a powerful buffalo demon from Hindu mythology. The mask's fierce and menacing nature is captured through a grotesque facial expression, large bulging eyes, and a snarling mouth with a monstrous grin.
A vibrant color palette of greens, reds, and blacks—often used in this art form to represent demons—enhances the mask's dramatic quality. A magnificent, semi-circular silver headdress with intricate, spiky, and beaded designs and a pair of large, menacing horns crown the head. This handcrafted mask is a powerful example of the Chhau tradition, capturing the essence of the legendary battle between the goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura.
