Set against a vibrant, solid crimson backdrop, this highly romantic piece in Sikki grass work by Suraj Kumar Sahu depicts the divine lovers Radha and Krishna sharing an intimate moment within the sacred forests of Braj.
Sikki grass craft is a unique, ancient folk art form practiced primarily by women artisans in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. The craft utilizes the wild, golden-hued Sikki grass (Saccharum bengalense), which grows abundantly in local swampy riverbeds and is harvested annually after the monsoons. The process involves drying the stalks, splitting them with a traditional iron needle (takua), and color-dyeing sections before weaving or appliqueing them onto a sturdy, flat base cloth or frame. Celebrated for its natural metallic luster and durability, the art form serves as an important repository of regional mythology and domestic ritual expression, translating complex scriptural iconography into tactile geometric folk textures.
Krishna is seated elegantly, playing his golden flute (bansuri) exclusively for Radha, who leans toward him in a posture of complete emotional and spiritual surrender. Krishna is dressed in a dhoti and upper garment, adorned with ornaments and a peacock feather headdress, while Radha is elegantly dressed in a ghagra, choli and veil, decorated with elaborate jewellery, holding a pair of lotus blossoms.
Overarching the divine couple is a sweeping, hand-hatched sacred tree canopy filled with dense, oval-shaped foliage clusters that enclose the lovers within a secluded, paradisiacal universe.
In Vaishnava theology, this scene carries deep mystical significance; Krishna's flute melody represents the irresistible call of the divine voice, while Radha's rapt attention symbolizes the individual human soul (Jivatma) achieving absolute union with the supreme universal soul (Paramatma) amidst the eternal bowers of devotion.
