This visually powerful composition in Sikki grass work by Suraj Kumar Sahu depicts a solitary, magnificent tiger striding gracefully through a dense, native wetland ecosystem.
Sikki grass craft is a unique, ancient folk art form practiced primarily by women artisans in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. The craft utilizes the wild, golden-hued Sikki grass (Saccharum bengalense), which grows abundantly in local swampy riverbeds and is harvested annually after the monsoons. The process involves drying the stalks, splitting them with a traditional iron needle (takua), and color-dyeing sections before weaving or appliqueing them onto a sturdy, flat base cloth or frame. Celebrated for its natural metallic luster and durability, the art form serves as an important repository of regional mythology and domestic ritual expression, translating complex scriptural iconography into tactile geometric folk textures.
The artisan has captured the form of the tiger using thousands of individual golden grass stalks arranged diagonally to perfectly mimic the undulating muscle volume and distinctive predatory camouflage stripes of the Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris).
The surrounding landscape is a masterclass in botanical documentation, realistically detailing a swampy grassland ecosystem heavily populated by wild Kash grass (Saccharum spontaneum) along the borders and dense clusters of water-blooming aquatic reeds at the lower right. A perfectly circular full moon floats in the sky, peeking out from behind the clouds, casting its light through the tree top over the wild marsh terrain.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
