This finely carved wooden sculpture portrays Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, in a serene seated posture. Crafted from Kumbla wood (Gmelina arborea), a lightweight yet durable medium traditionally sourced from the deciduous forests of Kerala, this piece reflects the rich South Indian heritage of temple woodcarving. Kumbla wood is revered for its smooth grain, allowing for the precise detailing required in sacred iconography.
Ganesha is depicted seated on a circular pedestal in sukhasana, with both legs folded inward, radiating stability and meditative calm. As a four-armed deity, his upper right hand holds an ankusha (elephant goad) to direct devotees toward the righteous path, while his upper left grasps a pasha (noose) to restrain worldly attachments. His lower right hand is raised in the abhaya mudra, offering divine protection and fearlessness, and his lower left cradles a sweet modak, symbolizing the rewards of spiritual devotion and wisdom.
The deity's countenance is marked by almond-shaped eyes and a gracefully curving trunk, projecting innocence and inner peace. He is adorned with a tiered conical crown, denoting his sovereign status, alongside intricately carved necklaces, armlets, and anklets. His prominent belly, identifying him as Lambodara, represents his ability to harmoniously digest all the experiences of the universe. It is bound securely by a Naga (serpent) wrapped around his waist, signifying cosmic restraint, time, and resilience. Framed by a carved architectural arch (prabhavali) that rises from the base to support the figure, the natural honey-gold finish of the Kumbla wood stands in striking contrast to the dark, stepped octagonal base, culminating in a masterwork of devotional artistry.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
