This exquisite wooden art piece is a remarkable portrayal of the divine essence and grace of Goddess Laxmi, in a calm and serene posture.
The sculpture is crafted from kumble wood, botanically known as Gmelina arborea. This material is known for its lightweight and durable qualities, making it an ideal medium for intricate carvings. Sourced from the deciduous trees of the southern Indian subcontinent, particularly Kerala, kumble wood has a long-standing tradition in temple architecture and the creation of deity sculptures, imbuing this artwork with profound spiritual significance.
In this detailed sculpture, Goddess Laxmi is depicted seated on a beautifully crafted lotus throne in a lalitasana pose, a posture that represents grounding, stability and contemplation. The lotus, a central symbol in this depiction, embodies purity, fertility, growth and fortune, qualities that are integral to the goddess’s identity. She is portrayed with four arms, where her upper hands gracefully hold a lotus in each. Her front hands are positioned in the abhaya mudra on the right, symbolising protection and fearlessness, while the varada mudra on the left signifies her willingness to bestow prosperity and fortune upon her devotees, as achieved through the carving, which shows the gold coins pouring out of the hands.
The facial features of the goddess exude a sense of calm and inner peace. Her small, almond-shaped eyes, elongated nose and fuller lips contribute to an expression that invites devotion and reverence. Atop her head rests a finely detailed crown, signifying her royal status and divine authority. She is adorned with an array of intricate ornaments, including earrings, two layers of necklaces, shoulder ornaments, armlets, bangles, a girdle and anklets. The craftsmanship is evident in the flowing patterns of her attire, showcasing delicate frills and creases that add depth and realism to the sculpture.
Behind her throne, an elaborately carved scalloped arch frames the goddess. At the centre of the arch is a kirtimukha, a traditional motif often associated with protecting against evil. The meticulous carving and chiselling on the wood display an extraordinary level of detail. This artwork stands as a profound representation of divine femininity, grace and the nurturing power of Goddess Laxmi.
