About the Artwork +

This simplistic rendition of a crane is a horn craft created by Horn Craft Dealer. The bird is rendered in a graceful manner.

Horn Craft is a unique craft produced using the animal horns, such as cattle or buffalo horns, which are carved to make decorative and utilitarian artefacts. Originally, this craft began in Paralakhemundi in Odisha and later flourished in other parts of the Indian subcontinent such as Bengal, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. The polishing techniques help to sustain the black shades on the objects with a smooth and glossy surface.

This beautiful artefact is a crane standing tall, with its long, elongated, slender legs. Its head is raised high, holding an item in its open mouth. The artist has intentionally kept it slightly open to make the object a utilitarian item, kept on a study table. With its graceful body contours and curving outlines, the bird looks alive and animated. The feathers and the tail of the bird are thin, finely hammered with rigid outlines, adding structure and elegance to its coherent shape and form. The legs and the head of the crane are polished black, while the feathers of the bird are coloured in cream. This colour contrast stands out with its rich compositional element. The texture is smooth, suggesting stillness and motion both in a single sculptural composition.
