About the Artwork +
This intricate Madhubani painting by Abdhesh Kumar Karn presents a breathtakingly symmetrical and highly vibrant nature narrative, showcasing two grand, stylized peacocks perched dynamically within a fruit-bearing tree.
Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a folk art tradition of the Mithila region in north Bihar, sustained for centuries by women of the household who painted on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes. Characterized by complex geometrical patterns, these paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals and religious rituals. A defining principle of this tradition is the complete filling of the canvas with elaborate background texturing, ensuring that no negative space remains blank.
In Madhubani painting, the peacock is a sacred and powerful symbol that goes far beyond mere decoration. It primarily represents love, romance and conjugal bliss, which is why a pair of peacocks is a central motif in traditional Kohbar (wedding chamber) paintings to bless newlyweds with a harmonious marriage. Additionally, because the peacock dances at the arrival of rain, it serves as a potent emblem of fertility, agricultural prosperityand the celebration of new beginnings. Deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology, the bird also symbolizes divine grace, beauty, and royalty, often evoking the vibrant presence of Lord Krishna who famously wore its feather in his crown.
At the centre of the artwork is the balanced, symmetrical pairing of two large peacocks positioned on opposite sides of the central tree trunk, facing inward toward one another. As per traditional Madhubani aesthetics, both birds are rendered with elongated, elegant contours outlined in crisp black ink. Their heads feature striking, curved red bills and large, stylized almond-shaped eyes that give them an alert and lively expression. The bodies of the peacocks are layered with delicate, fish-scale scalloped patterns shaded in soft pastel pinks and creams, mimicking smooth breast feathers.
The ornamentation of the peacocks' plumage highlights traditional line-work and color blocking. Above each bird's back is a sweeping, crescent-shaped wing panel divided into multi-colored segments of lavender, blue and green, completely packed with fine, internal parallel line shading (kachni). Mirroring this intricate texture below is their magnificent, fan-like tail plumage that extends downward and outward toward the lower corners. The tails expand in a massive wheel of alternating orange and blue panels, meticulously detailed with cross-hatched lines.
Anchoring the entire avian narrative is a central tree that partitions the composition into two harmonious halves. The trunk of the tree rises straight from the bottom, detailed with horizontal and vertical bark stripes. Its branches twist and weave gracefully across the upper part of the canvas, creating an extensive canopy composed of small, pointed green leaves, each meticulously veined with precise black ink strokes. Hanging abundantly throughout this dense canopy are numerous rounds, orange fruits.
The composition is enclosed within a traditional geometric frame that provides a stately finish to the artwork. The inner border consists of a running decorative band filled with repeating, double-pointed seed motifs. A bold red border at the edge acts as a perfect visual anchor for the intricate patterns and vibrant colors within, delivering a beautifully cohesive and authentic folk masterpiece that honors the enduring legacy of Madhubani heritage.
