Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a folk art tradition of the Mithila region in north Bihar, sustained for centuries by women of the household who painted on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes. Characterized by complex geometrical patterns, these paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals and religious rituals. A defining principle of this tradition is the complete filling of the canvas with elaborate background texturing, ensuring that no negative space remains blank.

At the center of the artwork is a mirrored pairing of two stylized peacocks, positioned back-to-back but facing outward with. In Mithila heritage, the peacock is a symbol of love and the vibrant fertility of nature. Rather than being depicted as entirely separate entities, these two birds are unified by a large, shared tail plumage that arches over their heads, spread out like a fan. This underscores the concepts of partnership, unity and shared destiny.

Both birds are rendered with the classic, elongated features characteristic of the Madhubani tradition. Their heads feature stark white faces contrasted against bold, deep red bills and large, fish-shaped eyes outlined in thick black ink. The curved breast panels of the peacocks are decorated with a yellow wash, filled with meticulous rows of red scallops that simulate a smooth plumage. Their wing panels are packed with exceptionally fine, parallel line shading (kachni) that provides a beautiful textual contrast. The shared tail plumage rises as a grand, scalloped canopy. It is divided into distinct, flame-like segments painted in warm ochre and orange tones. Within each segment lies a stylized "eye" composed of nested teardrop shapes in gray and crimson red.

Flanking the birds on the left and right are the stylized, curved trunks of a tree. Instead of depicting standard branches and leaves, the artist treats the entire background as a dense, undulating foliage. This negative space is entirely filled with hundreds of tightly packed concentric circles, executed with fine black line-work against a stark white background. This hypnotic patterning mimics a lush, canopy-like environment while creating a powerful contrast that highlights the colorful, central figures.

The composition is enclosed within a traditional border that locks the swirling energy of the internal patterns in place. A bold black band at the edge acts as a perfect visual anchor, delivering a beautifully cohesive and authentic folk masterpiece that honors the enduring legacy of Madhubani heritage.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.
• If you request express shipping. Contact support to check availability.
• The order contains more than two different product types.
