Art Form

Ganjifa

Ganjifa, a historical card game popularised by the Mughals, was played throughout India, with each area having its unique form. These handpainted cards were exceptionally circular in shape and rarely encountered in rectangular shape. Originally constructed of ivory or tortoise shell to satisfy the royals, it was ultimately replaced by wood, leaves, stiffened linen, and other materials. The cards fell out of favour in the 12th century, with India being the last country to create them. In Odisha, however, one common variant known as Ganjapa still remains.
