This evocative Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar depicts a well-dressed Babu receiving personal grooming from a female attendant. Often associated with the idea of Babu Seva, the scene presents an image of leisure, refinement and service, while also recalling Kalighat’s interest in the self-indulgent habits of the wealthy Babu class.
Kalighat painting is a traditional folk art form that emerged in nineteenth-century Kolkata, West Bengal. Known for its bold brushwork, expressive figures and minimalistic compositions, the style is characterised by strong, flowing outlines, flat yet vibrant colours and simplified forms. Alongside devotional subjects, Kalighat artists depicted contemporary urban life, including Babus, courtesans, servants and domestic scenes, often using humour to comment on the aspirations and excesses of colonial society.
At the centre of the composition sits the Babu on a small, striped parrot-green stool. His body is shown in three-quarter profile, while his face is turned upwards with his eyes closed as he receives the trimming of his moustache. He wears a short kurta-like upper garment, a white dhoti and a gamcha draped across his shoulders, its folds shaded in blue and its edges defined by a black border. His relaxed posture, carefully groomed moustache and black shoes suggest a man of wealth and elevated social standing.
The Babu’s face follows the familiar Kalighat vocabulary, with fish-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, a long prominent nose, small lips and shoulder-length open hair. His hands are crossed and placed over his thighs, reinforcing his stillness as he submits to the grooming ritual. His composed expression and carefully arranged appearance convey the cultivated refinement associated with the urban Babu, whose personal presentation often became a subject of Kalighat satire.
Standing before him is the female attendant, shown fully in profile as she concentrates on her task. She wears a red sari with maroon shading defining the folds, along with white and black borders and a gold-edged pallu. Her left hand gently supports the Babu’s chin, directing his face upwards, while her right hand holds a pair of scissors as she trims his moustache. This controlled interaction places her in a position of practical authority, even as she remains engaged in the service of the seated patron.
The woman is richly adorned with long earrings, a choker, a longer necklace, amulets, bangles and anklets, while her hair is tied into a decorated bun with a gajra. Her facial features follow the stylised Kalighat manner, and the warm red of her sari provides a strong contrast to the Babu’s white and blue attire. The careful rendering of her jewellery and clothing transforms an ordinary act of grooming into a scene of ceremonial attention.
The background is kept largely plain, allowing the two figures and their interaction to remain the focus of the composition. Above them, teal and black striped curtains with golden borders create a theatrical frame, recalling the proscenium-like settings frequently used in Kalighat imagery. This staged arrangement presents the Babu’s grooming not merely as a private service but as a public display of wealth, fashion and cultivated leisure.
Through its confident outlines, restrained setting and emphasis on personal grooming, the painting reflects Kalighat’s fascination with Babu culture and its rituals of display. Anwar Chitrakar transforms a simple moustache-trimming session into a humorous yet carefully structured image of status, service and urban refinement.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
