This Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar presents a sharply satirical Babu-Bibi scene, where a woman strides forward with confidence while a man trails behind in a posture of comic submission. Through its playful reversal of gendered power and its use of animal imagery, the work transforms a modern outdoor setting into a pointed comment on domestic authority and social identity.
Kalighat painting is a traditional folk art form that emerged in nineteenth-century Kolkata, West Bengal. Known for its bold brushwork, expressive figures and minimalistic compositions, the style is defined by strong, fluid outlines, flat yet vibrant colours and a long history of social satire alongside devotional themes. Patua artists used this visual language to comment on babu culture, changing gender roles and the hypocrisies of colonial urban life.
At the centre of the composition is the woman, shown in three-quarter profile as she moves toward the left side of the frame. Her body is slim and upright, dressed in a fitted white outfit with blue shading at the folds and black borders that sharpen the silhouette. The modern cut of her hair and her forward motion give her a confident, contemporary presence, while her turned head suggests that she is aware of the figure behind her.
Her features follow the familiar Kalighat vocabulary, with fish-shaped eyes, arched brows, a prominent nose and small lips. She wears orange bangles and black shoes, and in her left hand she holds a leash, marking her as the one in control of the scene. The man following behind her is shown on her right, visually transformed into a dog-like companion, with his tongue out in a gesture of comic obedience.
The black dog at the lower centre reinforces this satirical fusion, serving both as a literal animal and as a visual extension of the man’s submissive role. The leash linking the woman to the dog, and by implication to the man, makes the power dynamic explicit without needing narration. In this reading, the husband becomes the pet, reduced to an amusing and dependent presence within the tableau.
Behind the figures, a vivid magenta platform lifts the composition and introduces a strong block of colour to the lower register. From it rises a stylised tree with feather-like tree-leaves, adding decorative rhythm without disturbing the scene’s clarity. The background remains spare, allowing the figures, the leash and the animal imagery to carry the narrative force of the work.
Through its confident outlines, restrained palette and exaggerated humour, the painting extends Kalighat’s satirical tradition into a contemporary social register. It turns the familiar Babu-Bibi dynamic into a lively visual joke, while also reflecting on power, mobility and domestic authority in a changing urban world.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
