This exquisitely handcrafted leather lampshade by Sindhe Sriramulu is executed in the traditional Tholu Bommalata style, adapting the visual language of shadow puppetry into a contemporary decorative object. Its composition centres on a richly ornamented elephant surrounded by flowering vines, while the limited palette of cobalt blue, ivory white and black creates a luminous interplay of pattern, light and translucent leather.
Tholu Bommalata is a centuries-old leather craft historically associated with Andhra Pradesh’s shadow-puppet tradition. Artisans traditionally cut and hand-painted translucent leather to create puppets representing episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Hindu mythological narratives. In this contemporary adaptation, the same techniques have been applied to a lampshade, preserving the craft’s intricate detailing, vibrant colour and relationship with illumination.
The lampshade is designed as a rectangular trapezoidal lantern that tapers gently towards the top and rests upon four slender metallic supports. Its treated leather surface becomes a decorative field for the painted composition, allowing the blue and white motifs to glow when illuminated from within.
Occupying the lower half of the composition is a richly ornamented elephant shown in profile, facing towards the left. Its large almond-shaped eye, curved trunk, prominent tusks and rounded forehead are defined through bold black outlines and fluid contour lines. The body is covered with elaborate decorative patterns, including blankets, necklaces, anklets and harnesses, while the ears, legs and trunk are filled with floral and geometric motifs that highlight the precision of the artisan’s hand.
Behind the elephant, a flowering vine curves upwards through the blue and white background before terminating in a large circular floral medallion near the upper centre. The medallion is formed from concentric layers of petals arranged around a detailed central disc, while smaller blossoms, leaves and buds fill the surrounding space. These elements create a rhythmic ornamental field without disturbing the central prominence of the elephant.
The elephant stands upon a stylised ground composed of rounded floral forms and delicate vertical sprigs of vegetation, suggesting a natural landscape through simplified decorative shapes. The upper and lower edges are enclosed by horizontal blue and white bands, with a delicate scalloped frieze beneath the upper border. These linear details frame the composition and reinforce the symmetry of the lampshade.
When illuminated, the cobalt blue ground gains a deeper radiance while the ivory motifs glow softly against the black outlines. Through its decorated elephant, luminous surface and carefully balanced composition, the lampshade reimagines the storytelling vocabulary of Tholu Bommalata as a functional object while retaining the distinctive aesthetic identity of its tradition.
