About the Artwork +

The Indian epic of Mahabharata revolves around the story of a set of two cousins – the Kauravas and the Pandavas. The war of Mahabharata is the war of good over evil and right versus wrong. While the Kauravas had superior military strength, the Pandavas were supported by Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu. Since lord Krishna had decided not to lift a weapon in the war, he decided to be the charioteer of Arjuna, the mighty Pandava.

This painting depicts the moment right before the war was about to begin. At this moment Arjuna was confronted with a moral conundrum, facing his uncles, teacher and brothers in the war. It was at this moment that Shri Krishna revealed his true form as Vishvarupa, the Supreme Being. He teaches Arjuna about the relationship between the soul and the temporary body. He advises Arjuna to continue performing his duties without any expectations of the result, whether victory or defeat. He asks Arjuna to seek refuge in him. Through his revelation, Krishna finally convinces him to fight the righteous war, even with its painful consequences.

In this painting, we can see Arjuna with his bow and arrows, worshipping Krishna after his true revelation. They are both heavily adorned with jewellery and crowns. Lord Krishna blesses Arjuna with one hand while holding the reins of his four white horses in another. Their chariot is painted with architectural features similar to temples, with their arches, pillars and shikhar, or the top of the temples. Each part of the painting is intricately painted.  At the top of the chariot. We can see the Pandavas’ flag depicting Lord Hanuman, poised to leap, painted in a traditional Kalamkari style. According to legends, the first Kalamkari painting was the depiction of Lord Hanuman on cloth for the Pandavas’ flags.
