About the Artwork +

Dr. J. Dundaraja portrays a vivid and captivating depiction of Goddess Chamundeshwari, a deity of immense significance and reverence in the cultural and spiritual heritage of Mysore. The painting captures Goddess Chamundeshwari in all her resplendent glory, adorned in a vibrant green saree that symbolises the lushness of nature and her connection to it. Her complexion, a striking shade of blue, adds an otherworldly and divine aura to her presence. The central focus of the artwork presents Chamundeshwari mounted on a ferocious lion, a symbol of both her dominion and her fearlessness. The goddess takes on a grand avatar, exuding a powerful aura. In her hand, she wields her divine weapon, preparing to vanquish the buffalo demon Mahisasur. Through this exquisite work of art, Chamundeshwari's benevolence, strength, and role in safeguarding Mysore and its people are vividly brought to life, reminding us of the enduring power of devotion and protection.

Mysore painting

Mysore painting is an important form of classical South Indian painting style that originated in and around the town of Mysore in Karnataka encouraged and nurtured by the Mysore rulers.
