This captivating square relief artwork by Madhabi Baidya showcases the delicate, ethereal elegance of West Bengal’s traditional Sholapith craft. Through a dramatic diagonal split composition, the piece transforms a pristine, natural medium into a meditative study on texture and duality in sculptural form.
Sholapith is an ancient, eco-friendly craft indigenous to the wetlands of West Bengal, crafted from the milky-white, spongy pith extracted from the stems of the wild shola plant (Aeschynomene aspera). Renowned for its feather-light weight and ivory-like texture, shola is traditionally carved into sacred ornaments for deity idols (Dak Shola) and wedding crowns (topor). In this modern relief panel, this sacred medium is reimagined, showcasing both raw stem cross-sections and intricately shaved petals to celebrate the plant's remarkable versatility.
The artwork is split along an elegant diagonal axis, dividing the square plane into two contrasting textural realms. The bottom left is a structured field composed of flat, sliced cylindrical discs of shola stem. Each disc features a subtle central perforation, arranged in rhythmic rows that resemble a stone pebble riverbed.
The top (right) features a densely clustered, high-relief canopy of hand-carved shola blossoms, resembling fully bloomed chrysanthemums and marigolds, that burst forth with lavish organic volume. The transition from the flat, minimalist discs to the lush, feathery floral petals creates a captivating sense of growth and transformation across the canvas.
The piece relies entirely on the un-dyed, natural, milky-white tone of pure shola pith, delivering a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Without relying on color, the artwork derives its energy from depth, the flat discs reflect ambient light smoothly, while the deeply layered floral petals trap soft shadows to create striking textural contrast.
Mounted flush against a square backing, the composition extends directly to the borders, giving the piece a floating, wall-sculpture quality. The sharp geometric outer square neatly anchors the organic exuberance of the shola carvings within a refined boundary.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
