About the Artwork +

This vibrant Sohrai painting by Rukmani Devi presents a beautifully organized assembly of five festive peacocks arranged in a striking, symmetrical lineup. Sohrai is an ancient indigenous ritual art tradition practiced primarily by tribal women in the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, traditionally painted onto the mud walls of homes during the harvest festival to honor livestock and the spirits of the natural world. Within this cultural framework, the peacock is celebrated as a vital symbol of fertility, natural beauty, and the joyful arrival of the life-giving monsoons. In this unique contemporary rendition on canvas, the artist takes a highly stylized approach to wildlife, presenting a structured yet playful composition that transforms a flock of birds into a unified visual rhythm.

The artwork features an exceptionally balanced, linear configuration set against a clean white background. Standing proudly at the absolute center is a teal-green peacock depicted in a direct frontal pose with both eyes fixed forward and its red beak pointed down. Flanking this central figure symmetrically on either side are two pairs of peacocks rendered in profile, all looking inward toward the center. To the immediate left is a bright yellow bird followed by a warm brown one on the far left; to the immediate right is a rich maroon-red bird followed by a vibrant blue one on the far right.

Each bird features an elongated, teardrop-shaped body adorned with uniform rows of painted white dots that accentuate their elegant, sweeping curves. They are all crowned with elaborate, tree-like crests consisting of black stems topped with striking blue and white concentric circles, simulating the iconic "eyespots" of a peacock’s plumage.

The avian quintet is beautifully framed by natural elements that ground the figures into a cohesive forest setting. On the far left and far right edges of the canvas, two stylized brown tree trunks rise from patches of green grass, their branches stretching horizontally across the top to form a leafy, dapple-green canopy over the birds. This creates an inviting, localized habitat, emphasizing the harmony between the wildlife and their forest shelter. The use of flat, opaque colors combined with a repetitive, graphic dot pattern strips away realistic depth, highlighting the bold, structural symmetry and primal decorative energy characteristic of traditional tribal design.

The entire scene is enclosed within an elegant and festive multi-colored border that provides a formal, decorative frame. This border is composed of a repeating, alternating sequence of deep violet diamonds and playful, stylized pink "S" curves painted against a white band. This geometric frame wraps tightly around the artwork, containing the vibrant primary colors and structured layout of the interior while paying homage to the geometric friezes traditionally used to delineate sacred spaces on the walls of tribal dwellings.

Rukmani Devi

Rukmani Devi
Prajapati artist Rukmani Devi is a member of the pottery crafting community, preserving the Prajapati Khovar painting traditions passed down from her mother and mother-in-law. She is particularly recognized for her luminous tree of life paintings and murals, a distinctive style that led to her selection as one of four tribal women artists invited to Australia by the Australian Museum. Her work, including large murals and permanent ground alpana, has been exhibited at the Djamu Gallery in Sydney, and samples are held in the Australian Museum and the Brisbane Art Gallery, where her 'Tree of Life with Mandala' is on display.

Sohrai

Sohrai is an ancient Indian art form, primarily practiced by tribal women in Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha, with its origins rooted in nature worship and harvest festivals. Legend suggests it began as an offering to nature deities for bountiful harvests, symbolizing fertility, protection, and ancestral connection. The most revered style, Sohrai Khovar painting, traditionally adorns bridal chambers, representing prosperity and marital bliss. Characterized by bold lines, rhythmic patterns, and symbolic colors like red (fertility), black (eternity), and white (purity), Sohrai art features themes inspired by tribal life, nature, and mythology, including birds, wildlife, trees, and fish. Artists use natural earth-based pigments such as Kali Mitti (black), Laal Mitti (red), and Pili Mitti (yellow), applied with fingertips, chewed twigs, or broken combs on white mud-coated walls. This spontaneous freehand technique reflects deep intuitive creativity passed down through generations. Today, Sohrai art is integrated into modern spaces through murals, canvas art, and home décor, with Ranchi playing a crucial role in its preservation and promotion.
