About the Artwork +

In the Terracotta art, artist Dolon Kundu beautifully carves lotus with leaves growing in a pond. The lotus has the unique quality of being able to grow in murky waters and still maintain its purity and beauty. This characteristic is seen as a symbol of resilience, strength, and the ability to overcome adversity. Beyond its spiritual and cultural connotations, the engraved lotus in a pond is also appreciated for its aesthetic value. The intricate detailing and craftsmanship in terracotta art make this motif a beautiful and visually appealing element in various art forms. Engraved lotus motifs are commonly used in decorative arts and architecture. They can adorn buildings, temples, and other structures, adding cultural and aesthetic value to these spaces.

Teracotta art has been practised in India for thousands of years, dating back to the Indus Valley civilization. Clay is used to make earthenware, figurines, and other ornamental items. Clay is dried and then fried at extremely high temperatures to allow it to take shape. The artform also has a spiritual importance, as it is claimed in Hinduism that this material uses the five components of the universe: air, water, fire, ether, and earth. States including as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have a long and illustrious history with the art form.
