This Madhubani painting by artist Pratima Bharti is a beautiful exploration of the theme of maternal or protective love, featuring an adult elephant and a calf. Madhubani art is a vibrant folk painting tradition from the Mithila region of India, renowned for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and symbolic depictions of mythology and nature.
The composition is dominated by the large adult elephant, which curves protectively over the smaller calf. This depiction creates a sense of security and familial bond. The larger figure is depicted with a massive, stylized head and a large, singular almond-shaped eye that stares out with a calm, watchful presence. Its body is not a single mass but a collection of patterned zones, creating a mosaic effect.
The calf is a smaller mirror of the parent, its body filled with vibrant diagonal bands alternating in a solid cream colour and patterns in green, orange and blue. Both elephants feature ears rendered as large, floral fans and a small, fruiting tree is nestled within the upper curve of the trunk. This symbolizes growth, sustenance and the interconnectedness of all living things, a recurring theme in Madhubani nature paintings.
The artwork showcases the interplay between the Bharni (filling) and Kachni (lines or stippling) styles. A wide array of internal patterns is used, including fine black stippling (dots) on the adult’s head, multi-colored hatching on the ears, and a striking blue panel decorated with a pink lotus and white stars that suggests a cosmic or divine connection. Every limb and trunk is textured with parallel line-work, giving the animals a rhythmic, vibrating quality that prevents the large figures from feeling static.
The scene is enclosed in a rigid, complex frame that acts as a structural anchor. The main border consists of square panels, each containing a four-petaled flower in alternating colors (red, green, blue and orange). Inner and outer bands of small, multicolored triangles around the main border provide a sharp, clean finish to the piece. The triangles are used to depict water chestnuts, found abundantly in the region. A thick black border defines the limits of the artwork, ensuring focus and harmony.
