About the Artwork +

In this mesmerizing Gond painting by Venkat Shyam, the artist breathes life into an enchanting vision of a flying elephant — a motif deeply rooted in tribal folklore and imaginative storytelling. Rendered in vibrant shades of azure blue, the elephant's body is adorned with meticulously hand-painted scales, a signature pattern of the talented artist formed by concentric half circles, a representation of his village and community, each one a testament to the Gond tradition’s intricate detailing and reverence for natural patterns.

Defying the constraints of earthly existence, the elephant soars gracefully against a brilliant orange backdrop, its golden, leaf-like wings outstretched in mid-flight, symbolizing freedom, transcendence, and the boundless spirit of nature. The wings are richly textured in mustard yellow and earthy browns, evoking the organic elements of earth and sky interwoven.

The creature’s expressive eye and upturned trunk add a playful, almost divine quality, recalling the celestial mount Airavata, the mount of Lord Indra, from Indian mythology, reimagined through the tribal lens. From its underbelly hangs a beautifully detailed bronze bell, intricately patterned and delicately suspended, evoking sacred temple sounds and the pulse of community gatherings. The tail, split into multiple tendrils ending in leaf motifs, furthers the theme of nature’s inseparability from tribal life and belief. The artist further emplys the use of dots, a pattern from which he seeks inspiration and reflects the Supreme God

Venkat Shyam’s composition invites viewers into a world where imagination and nature coexist seamlessly, celebrating a wisdom that honors the fantastical while remaining deeply rooted in the earth. This painting is not merely a visual delight but also a narrative of indigenous aspiration and cultural pride — a soaring testament to the Gond philosophy of interconnectedness between the natural, the mythical, and the human realms.

Venkat
Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, a visionary artist from the Gond community, has crafted a unique artistic language that is deeply rooted in his heritage and spirituality. In his art, he finds inspiration in the Bindu, a symbol representing the supreme god, and the half-moon that surrounds it, symbolizing his village and community. These elements form the foundation of his distinctive style, a style that he believes shares common threads with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso. Venkat's artistic journey began at the tender age of ten when he began etching the world around him onto the walls of his home and whatever scraps of newspaper he could find. Born into a Gond Pardhan family in Madhya Pradesh's Sejohra village, he has dedicated the past four decades to the world of art. Under the tutelage of his late uncle, the esteemed Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat learned to forge his own artistic path. His art beautifully weaves together the rich tapestry of his clan's historical legends with contemporary perspectives of the world. Venkat's work is a testament to the fluidity of tradition and the evolving narratives that connect the past with the present. As he aptly puts it, "Change is the ultimate rule of nature and the universe." While deeply rooted in tradition and mythology, his art constantly adapts to resonate with diverse audiences, bridging the gap between ancient stories and contemporary interpretations.
