In this vibrant Kalighat masterpiece, artist Uttam Chitrakar offers a soulful tribute to the divine union of Shiva and Parvati. Originating in 19th-century Kolkata near the Kalighat temple, this folk art style is celebrated for its ability to transform sacred narratives into accessible visual stories through bold, rhythmic linework and expressive, voluminous forms. Using a rich palette and the school’s signature brushwork, the artist captures the celestial couple in their transcendent abode of Kailash.
The composition centers on the profound connection between the deities as they sit together upon the great form of Nandi, the devoted bull. Shiva, representing the passive masculine energy of the universe, is portrayed with his characteristic matted hair (jata), a tiger skin around his waist, and his sacred attributes—the trishula (trident) and damru (drum). Beside him, Parvati embodies the active feminine energy of Shakti, her presence radiating grace and dynamism as she sits in a vibrant red and green saree adorned with pearl ornaments. Both deities are depicted with a third eye, signaling their supreme spiritual power and divine insight.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
