About the Artwork +

In Laila Chitrakar's enchanting Patachitra creation, a vibrant school of fish dances across the canvas, adorned with exquisite hues of pink, yellow, blue, and orange. Each fish, a miniature masterpiece, embodies traditional aesthetics and timeless charm. The symphony of colors and intricate detailing evokes a sense of wonder, captivating viewers with its ethereal beauty. Through skillful strokes and a deep reverence for tradition, Laila Chitrakar breathes life into this aquatic spectacle, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the magical world of Patachitra artistry.
Patachitra, a cherished art form hailing from West Bengal, embodies the rich tradition of storytelling in India. Created by skilled artisans known as Patuas or Chitrakars, these intricate scrolls depict captivating narratives through vivid paintings. The term 'Pata' originates from Sanskrit, referring to cloth, while 'Chitra' signifies painting. These scrolls serve as visual aids to accompany oral renditions of tales, known as Pater Gaan, where stories unfold as the scrolls are unfurled. Using natural mineral and vegetable colors sourced locally, Patachitra exudes bold hues and intricate details. From mythological epics to contemporary themes, these artworks reflect the essence of Indian culture and heritage.

    Laila Chitrakar

    Laila Chitrakar
Laila Chitrakar, a 32-year-old Bengal Pattachitra artist from Kolkata, West Bengal, continues a seven to eight-generation artistic legacy, having learned the craft from her maternal aunt and elder sister. Her talent has been recognized with first prizes in district and state-level competitions and her works have been exhibited across major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. Laila's art, celebrated for pieces like "Machli Ki Shaadi" and depictions of Radha Krishna's love story and tribal birth legends, utilizes diverse mediums including canvas, coasters, cloth, t-shirts, dupattas, wood, and walls, featuring subjects such as Durga Ma, fish, tribal motifs, and nature. Despite a lack of formal education, she expresses herself through art, dedicating herself to her craft from dawn till dusk with the aspiration of receiving the Rashtrapati Puraskar.

    Bengal Pattachitra

Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional Indian art form from West Bengal, known for its vibrant and intricate storytelling on cloth or paper. Originating in rural regions like Medinipur and Bankura, this art form dates back to ancient times, evolving from a medium for mythological and religious narratives to incorporate folk tales and social issues. Characterized by bold lines, flat natural colors, and stylized figures with elongated eyes, Patuas traditionally used natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with brushes made from animal hair or plant fibers, on surfaces prepared with chalk or tamarind seed paste. This art form holds immense cultural and historical significance, serving as a vital tool for preserving and transmitting stories and beliefs, often through a dynamic performance where artists sing while unrolling their scrolls, making it an immersive and educational experience.
