About the Artwork +

This Kalamkari painting by artist Ghanshyam Sarode is a striking example of the Srikalahasti style, where the mythical Gandaberunda is hand-drawn using a bamboo "kalam" (pen) on cotton fabric. In Hindu mythology, the Gandaberunda is a powerful, two-headed bird-animal hybrid, often depicted as a form of Lord Vishnu used to counteract destructive forces. Drawn in the Narayanpet style of Kalamkari and painted in the Srikalahasti tradition, the creature is portrayed here with a fierce, lion-like body covered in golden-yellow scales or feathers and two roaring heads topped with a shared, ornate crown. Its unique anatomy includes a long, serpent-like tail symbolizing total command over all elements of the natural world.

The color scheme is bold and dramatic, dominated by a deep indigo-blue background that makes the central figure surge forward. The Gandaberunda is rendered in a warm ochre yellow and madder red, its individual scales meticulously outlined to provide a sense of armored texture. Surrounding the central figure are scattered floral motifs and stylized temple hangings in shades of pink, yellow and sage green, which soften the intensity of the blue field.

Please note that all our Kalamkari wall hangings are completely hand-drawn and hand-painted using natural dyes. Because of the handmade process, the final piece may have slight variations in colours, motifs, and detailing compared to the reference image shared.

These small differences are a natural part of the Kalamkari craft and make each artwork unique and original. We assure you that the overall design, theme, and aesthetic will closely follow the approved reference.

By confirming the order, you acknowledge and accept these natural variations that are inherent to handmade art.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
