This striking Namada piece by Karim Mansuri depicts a bold, vertically oriented geometric composition centered around a dynamic starburst medallion. Through a meticulously structured multi-panel layout, the rhythmic symmetry, earthy warmth, and disciplined geometry of traditional felt crafting is captured.
Namada, derived from the ancient Sanskrit term namata meaning woolen material, is a non-woven felted textile art form with deep historical roots in Gujarat’s Kutch region. It involves a laborious process of carding, layering, moistening, and compressing raw sheep's wool with soap and water until the fibers naturally entangle into a dense mat. Preserved traditionally by the Mansuri community, this ancient craft relies not on looms or spinning wheels, but on the artisan's tactile mastery, inlaying hand-dyed felted wool and fine outline motifs directly into the raw fleece substrate.
The central panel of this composition highlights a grand, eight-pointed starburst motif that radiates dramatically outward from the midpoint. The alternating, elongated points of the star are rendered in deep terracotta red and slate grey, extending gracefully toward the edges of the central field like a celestial compass. Sharp, geometric angles and delicate contrasting outlines define each radiating ray, creating a hypnotic sense of movement that draws the eye continuously inward toward the central focal point.
Flanking this central geometric gathering are two structured horizontal panels at the top and bottom that balance the primary scene. These sections feature bold, repeating zigzag chevron bands in alternating grey and terracotta red, echoing the sharp angularity of the central starburst. The rhythmic, mountain-like peaks extend the graphic energy of the artwork upward and downward across the vertical canvas, establishing a harmonious, architectural cadence throughout the entire textile.
