About the Artwork +

This striking Soof piece by Daya Ben captures a series of vibrant parallel border tracks as zigzag lines, combining embroidery techniques with minimalist, colourful pattern repetition against a dark background.

Soof Embroidery is a traditional counted-thread embroidery practiced by women of the Meghwal community in the Kutch region of Gujarat. It is created by counting the weave of the fabric rather than drawing patterns, resulting in precise geometric designs. The embroidery is usually worked with silk threads on handwoven cotton fabric, often without any mirrors. Soof motifs are inspired by nature, including flowers, buds and abstract forms.

The composition consists of five vertical bands of embroidery, positioned sequentially from left to right, featuring the classical Leher (wave) pattern created with uniform, interlocking cross-stitch matrices. The primary zigzags are rendered in a cycling palette of red, blue, yellow and green silk threads. Small, individual white cross accents flank the peaks and valleys of each wave, adding a consistent, rhythmic movement and crisp texture to the linear progression.

The textile features the Soof school's signature bold style, using thick, sweeping tracks of counted thread to give the flat fabric a structured, volumetric presence. The colour palette relies on a striking contrast between the primary bands of red, blue and yellow against the black cotton background, further highlighted by meticulous white line-work punctuation.

Dayaben Bi Dohat, a National award-winning Soof artist from Gujarat's Tharad Shivner Society, began learning the intricate Soof embroidery technique from her mother at age 10. This 400-500-year-old craft, originating in Pakistan and brought to India by her family in 1971, involves meticulous stitching from the back of the cloth by counting each thread. Dayaben has significantly expanded the reach of Soof art, previously reserved for dowries, to national and international markets, promoting it in England, France, and Sri Lanka. She teaches workshops at institutions like NIFT and has empowered over 300 artisans.

Soof

Soof embroidery, originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India, is a traditional needlework art form predominantly practiced by women from communities like the Rabari and Ahir. Celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and meticulous detailing, Soof embroidery is unique because artisans work from the back of the fabric, counting threads to create symmetrical designs without pre-drawn patterns, relying instead on visualization. Historically rooted in nomadic traditions, the name "Soof" comes from the local word for triangle, the basic motif, and the craft served as a means of creative expression, cultural communication, and a symbol of prosperity. Using cotton or silk threads on various base fabrics, this exquisite embroidery adorns clothing and home decor, holding significant cultural, social, and economic value by preserving artistic heritage across generations and providing livelihoods.
