About the Artwork +

In this captivating artwork, a black backdrop with cream-colored hues sets the stage for a striking scene. On the right stands Hadksha Mata, a prominent figure, surrounded by jubilant people dancing and celebrating her presence. Above her, a sun with a distinct face radiates its divine warmth, bestowing blessings upon the gathering.
On the left, a sacred tree spreads its branches, home to a plethora of birds that fill the canvas. The birds symbolize freedom, vitality, and the harmonious connection between the earthly and the spiritual realms. Hadksha Mata’s presence commands attention, her devotees joyously honoring her with dance and celebration. The sun’s benevolent gaze complements the scene, signifying divine blessings and protection. The sacred tree and its avian inhabitants create a serene yet vibrant backdrop, symbolizing the intricate bond between nature and spirituality.
This artwork encapsulates a moment of reverence, celebration, and harmony, depicting the intertwining of the divine, nature, and human devotion within its serene yet jubilant tableau.

" This is our 300 year art that was previously done as block print on red and black colour but now we completely create the entire artwork by hand. I learnt this art from my father Shri Chunnilal ji." Sanjay Chittara is a leading exponent of the art of Mata ni Pachedi, and has been conferred the national award in 2000 and the state award in 1999. Today his son Sumit Sanjay Bhai Chittara is also learning the art from him and taking it forward in many new ways.

Mata Ni Pachedi

Mata ni Pachedi is a revered art form and religious tradition that originated amid the nomadic Vaghari community in Gujarat, India. The Vagharis were nomadic farmers living along the edge of the Sabarmati River. Mata ni Pachedi is their unique expression of devotion to the divine mother goddess, particularly Mataji, or Amba Mata. Traditionally, the term Mata ni Pachedi refers to the cloth used to cover the idol of the goddess during rituals and processions. The designs of the cloth often feature intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and depictions of the goddess in various forms, surrounded by symbols of auspiciousness and protection. Legend Legend has it that Mata ni Pachedi originated as a form of worship among the Vaghari community, who were traditionally devotees of the mother goddess. They believed that the goddess would protect them from harm and grant their wishes, leading to a deep-seated reverence for the goddess. Style and Technique The art form is characterized by its bold lines, stylized figures, and attention to detail, with each painting serving as a visual devotion to the goddess's divine attributes and blessings. The mata is always depicted in the center whereas there are also representations of singers, musicians, shamans, animals, and birds that seem to dance and fly in celebration of the goddess. Each mata has their own mount and attributes like Mamai mata sita atop a camel whereas Goddess Vahanvati travels in a boat. The traditional Mata ni Pachedi strictly adheres to two colors made of natural dyes- black and deep red. Mata ni Pachedi paintings are typically executed on cloth using natural pigments derived from plants, minerals, and other organic sources. Simply, the iron used in making black outlines of the work takes around 15 days to process. Later red color is filled using brushes made from bamboo. After the completion of the painting, it is washed and dried around the river. The colored dye is finally fixed with mordant and dried up in the sun.
