About the Artwork +
This monumental and dynamically populated Kalamkari painting by Kanukurthi Guna Sekhar Sai presents a breathtaking narrative landscape, capturing the epic Ramayana event of Lord Hanuman lifting the Himalayan mountain, Dronagiri, to retrieve the life-saving Sanjeevani herb. The composition achieves an extraordinary narrative density, functioning as a vibrant visual scripture.
At the center of this complex layout is the monumental, green-skinned form of Lord Hanuman, leaping mid-air in a powerful warrior stance. His left hand effortlessly balances the multi-colored, boulder-strewn mass of Mount Dronagiri overhead, while his right hand firmly grasps a massive, circular golden mace (gada) adorned with concentric geometric rings. His face is framed by a brilliant, solid crimson halo (bhamandal), and his long, curling tail loops dramatically upward behind him, its black tuft anchoring the upper right corner.
True to classical temple-cloth traditions, Hanuman’s body serves as a sacred canvas itself; his torso, arms and legs are intricately filled with miniature, embedded vignettes of Lord Shiva-Parvati, Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Hanumana, Asuras and various monkeys and sages in states of prayer and battle. Above him, a blue-skinned Rama, guided by his guru Vishwamitra, aims his bow at the demoness Tadaka.
Various other scenes from the epic are depicted here, like the asuras attempting to capture Hanuman, while he coils his tail into a huge pile and sites on it, the duel between Bali and Sugriva, and many more, all depicted with the background of the swirling, cloudy sky that Hanuman flies across.
The entire scene is encased in a sophisticated, multi-layered geometric frame that provides a stately finish to the highly organic interior. The inner border consists of a fine line of dots, followed by a wide, dominant outer band featuring repeating circular medallions containing stylized floral rosettes in alternating shades of forest green, ochre, yellow, and terracotta red. A final, thin sage-green outer border grounds the entire textile, delivering a beautifully cohesive and authentic masterpiece that honors the enduring legacy of traditional Andhra Kalamkari heritage.
