Hummingbirds and Sunbirds in Mughal Miniature by Mohan Prajapati

This richly detailed Mughal miniature painting by Mohan Prajapati presents an ornithological study of hummingbirds and sunbirds, combining a central gold leaf vignette with four freely placed marginal bird studies, continuing the Mughal tradition of avian portraiture prized for its scientific accuracy and decorative refinement.

Mughal miniature paintings are intricate, highly detailed artworks that flourished in India between the 16th and 19th centuries. This courtly art form uniquely blends bold Indian colors, delicate Persian lines, and European shading, capturing a vivid record of the Mughal era.

At the centre of the composition, framed in gold leaf and bordered by lines of black Persian calligraphy, two birds are shown in a naturalistic woodland setting: an emerald-green sunbird perches calmly within a pale pink, cup-shaped nest cradled in the fork of a slender branch, while below it a second bird, painted in dramatic contrasting hues of crimson-red, sapphire-blue, and golden-yellow, with long curved wings and an elongated dark beak, is captured mid-flight, swooping toward the nest against a softly washed olive-green ground. Sprigs of bamboo-like leaves in fresh green extend along the right edge of the gold panel, adding botanical detail to the scene.

Beyond this central vignette, four additional birds are scattered freely across the surrounding cream-toned paper: at the top, a slim bird with a violet-blue head, white underbelly, and elongated double-streamer tail feathers; at the upper left, a bird perched on a bare twig with an emerald head, white throat, and indigo-tipped wings; at the lower left, a similarly perched bird with a green crown, golden-yellow breast, and long dark tail; and at the bottom, a hovering bird with a brilliant ruby-red throat, white belly, and slate-blue wings, evoking a true hummingbird in flight. The aged, deckle-edged paper bears soft brown foxing and water staining along the lower left corner, lending the sheet the weathered authenticity of a genuine historical manuscript folio.

24K gold foil is used in this painting.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.
• If you request express shipping. Contact support to check availability.
• The order contains more than two different product types.
