About the Artwork +

In a single, masterful work, artist Braj Bhooshan Dhurwey takes us on a captivating journey through the cosmos, uniting the worlds of water and earth on his canvas. Gond art, rooted in Central India and especially Madhya Pradesh, is a tribute to nature, created by the Gond tribes using intricate geometric patterns of lines, dots, and dashes.

This unique painting is a duality, presenting two vibrant ecosystems. One half is dedicated to the world of water, teeming with aquatic life. Fish, turtles, lizards, and crabs float in the deep, interdependent on one another and the sun. Dhurwey uses a vibrant palette of oranges and purples, with a lizard blending seamlessly into the base of the sea. The creatures are brought to life with his signature 'Machli ka Jaal' (fishnet) and 'Half Juda' patterns, creating dynamic forms with echoes of arcs and nets.

The other side of the canvas showcases life on land. Here, deers, elephants, and birds depend on the trees, the sun, and each other for survival. Dhurwey employs his same signature patterns to give the animals depth and a sense of movement. Painted in brilliant greens, yellows, reds, purples, and blues, this half is as mesmerizing as the aquatic world.

This thought-provoking piece is a perfect addition to any collection, a statement work that celebrates traditional values and a deep reverence for nature. Dhurwey effortlessly creates a magical piece that will bring aesthetic and spiritual depth to any space.

Braj
Born on September 13, 1986, in Patangarh, Dindori, Braj Bhooshan Dhurwey embarked on his artistic journey after moving to Bhopal, where he refined his Gond painting skills through a 2012-2013 workshop and subsequent training under Kailash Pradhan at the Crafts Museum Delhi. With a Bachelor's Degree, he now professionally creates art on canvas, paper, and dupattas made with various types of fabrics, drawing inspiration from his seniors and primarily depicting nature and tribal themes, though he has also explored the theme of the Mahabharata as well. His distinctive style is characterized by unique patterns such as "rassi ka dhera," "machli ka jaal," and "rassi ka sumadora." While he faces no difficulties in the painting process itself, his main challenge lies in finding adequate platforms to showcase his work. Braj Bhooshan Dhurwey is deeply committed to preserving and advancing Gond art, aspiring to secure better platforms and ensure the art form's prosperity for future generations, even having moved his family to Bhopal to support this mission.
