About the Artwork +

Prepare to be mesmerized by the explosion of color and symbolic depth in this captivating Madhubani painting, brought to life by the skilled hand of artist Priti Karn, depicting Goddess Kali in her fierce and transformative form. Originating from Bihar, India, Madhubani art is renowned for its intricate patterns, bold colors, and mythological themes, traditionally created by women on walls during various occasions, festivals and weddings. This piece, rendered in distinctive characteristics of Madhubani, showcases Kali's powerful symbolism and her role as the destroyer of ignorance. The painting portrays Kali standing atop a prostrate Shiva, symbolizing her mastery over ego and illusion. Her disheveled hair, a sign of her unbound nature, flows freely. In her upper left hand, she holds a severed head, representing the cutting away of ego and the cycle of birth and death. Her upper right hand holds a curved sword, signifying the power to destroy ignorance and negativity. The skulls adorning her body represent the transient nature of existence and the ultimate liberation from fear. The two female attendants, perhaps her alter-egos, flanking her, depicted in blue, symbolize the duality of creation and destruction. The vibrant colors, typical of Madhubani, highlight Kali's divine form and the dynamic scene. The intricate patterns and stylized figures, characteristic of the art form, enhance the painting's visual appeal, drawing the viewer into the profound symbolism of the Goddess. The border, adorned with traditional Madhubani motifs, frames the central scene, adding to the overall aesthetic. At the bottom, a potted plant symbolizes life and nature's abundance, while a geometric design, possibly a yantra, represents cosmic energy and spiritual focus. This artwork, crafted by Priti Karn, not only showcases the artistic brilliance of Madhubani but also illuminates the complex and powerful symbolism of Goddess Kali, preserving India's rich cultural heritage.
