About the Artwork +
This Madhubani painting by artist Priti Karn depicts the powerful mythological scene of Kaliya Mardan, where the young Lord Krishna subdues the venomous serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna River. Rendered in the vibrant Bharni (color-filling) style, the composition is dominated by the monumental, golden-yellow form of the multi-headed serpent coiled amidst the river's currents. Krishna is shown standing triumphantly atop the serpent's hoods, his skin a deep cerulean blue, dressed in a bright yellow dhoti and an ornate crown adorned with a peacock feather. He holds a staff in one hand and maintains a poised, dance-like stance, symbolizing the victory of divine grace over toxic ego.
The surrounding river is a flurry of activity and devotion, filled with small, colorful fish and blossoming pink lotuses that drift through the swirling white and grey water. On either side of the central scene, the Naga Kanyas (serpent wives) are shown with their hands folded in prayer, pleading with Krishna to spare their husband's life. Their long, dark hair and expressive, almond-shaped eyes are classic hallmarks of the Mithila tradition, and their presence adds a layer of compassionate drama to the landscape. In the background, dark, arching trees filled with floral motifs frame the encounter, grounding the celestial event in the sacred geography of Vrindavan.
To enhance the painting's spiritual glow, the artist has incorporated genuine silver leafing on Krishna’s jewelry, the serpent's ornaments, and the celestial details, creating a shimmering effect that catches the light. The entire work is enclosed within a complex triple border featuring a wavy blue "leheriya" pattern, a band of red geometric petals, and a solid black outer frame. By combining intricate "Kachni" line work with bold primary colors, Priti Karn transforms this intense mythological battle into a harmonious and rhythmic celebration of divine power.
