This captivating Pattachitra painting by Purusottam Swaim depicts various scenes from Krishna's life. Odisha Pattachitra is a traditional folk painting of the region, which translates to painting done on cloth. The significant features of the painting include the decorative borders, fine lines, vibrant colour palette, and sharp profiles. The painting delineates a scene of mythological and narrative depiction. In current times, the tradition of painting the scrolls of Pattachitra is highly recognised in Raghurajpur, a celebrated heritage village of Odisha.
The composition is layered with concentric rectangles. The innermost space of the composition renders the image of Lord Krishna and Radha, embracing each other in presence, dressed in elegant garments and embellished with jewellery. Krishna wears a tiered crown with a peacock feather (moorpankha) at its top, as a halo radiates his divine energy. On the other hand, Radha is shown holding a tray of flowers with a serene gaze towards her beloved.
They are placed against the beautiful depiction of mesmerizing flowering groves with the presence of fauna like a cluster of deer, a peacock, and a family of swans swimming in a Yamuna river, witnessing their union, love and togetherness. The divine couple is further flanked by several female attendants carrying a tray of flowers, pots, holding the shafts of huge fans and a parasol.
The composition is flanked by the depiction of dashavataras (the ten forms of Lord Vishnu), in a vertical manner, five on either side. The forms are Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama (warrior with an axe), Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki (the future warrior). The painting is further enriched with the depictions of Krishna and Radha with two attendants, set against sacred groves.
The outermost panels depict the story of Krishna's life, right from his birth in the jail at Mathura, Vasudeva crossing the Yamuna river with him, to Vasudeva carrying him to Gokul and bringing back yogamaya in his place, Kansa killing her and her subsequent warning, Krishna defeating various asuras like Putana, Shakatasura, Bakasura, Panchajana, Dhenukasura, him being Pampered in Gokul, punished for his mischief, the Damodara Leela, etc.
The inner panels panels continue the depictions of the leelas of Krishna, with varying portrayals of Radha Krishna, while at other times with his brother Balarama, episodes that showcase conflict like Kuvalayapeeda, Keshivadha and Kaliyamardan (defeating the serpent). The composition also renders his mischievous activities like Vastraharan (stealing the clothes of the gopis), along with his mighty act of lifting Mount Govardhana to safeguard the lives of his Brajwasis from the wrath of Lord Indra. Finally, its depicts the defeat of Kansa, the reinstallation of Ugrasena on the throne and Krishna's union with his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva.
The composition is filled with decorative motifs and patterns apart from the figurative representation. The painting is so colourful and vibrant, providing a timeless beauty and lively animation. Further, the composition is enclosed within a narrow border of decorative patterns.
The sizes mentioned are excluding the borders of the artwork. Frames shown are for visual representation only and are not included with the artwork.
