About the Artwork +
This captivating Kerala mural by Adarsh represents the Kundalini, the feminine energy associated with spirituality, yogic traditions and Tantric rituals. Originating from Kerala, these murals were traditionally painted on the walls and ceilings of dwellings, temples, and palaces; characterised by expressive forms, large eyes, graceful depiction, vibrant colour palettes and elaborate ornaments. These depict themes from mythological stories, oral narratives and folk culture.
At the center of the composition is a human body, with the Kundalini coiled around it like a serpent. The Kundalini emerges from the base of the spine, near the Muladhara chakra. The paintings depicts the seven sacred chakras present in the body, each woth its own location, colour representation, element and sacred bija-mantra or seed syllable. these chakras lie along the spine, with the Muladhara chakra at the base, symbolising earth and stability. This is followed by the Svadhisthana chakra located in the pelvic region, sacral, creative and filled with emotions. The third chakra is the Manipura, located at the navel, which represents willpower and transformation; followed by the Anahata chakra in the heart, which symbolises love and compassion. In the throat is the Vishuddha Chakra, representing expression and communication. The sixth chakra is the Ajna chakra, located in between the eyebrows, which denotes insight and discernment. Transcending these six chakras, the kundalaini rises to the Sahasrara, located above the crown ofthe head, uniting with the cosmos.
This composition reimagines the human body as a tree, with its roots being the nerves or nadis, rooted in the chakras, as the creative energy (shakti) or Kundalini, symbolic of Prakriti, meets Purusha or conciousness, leading to creation, as shown by the tree represented here.
The composition is rooted in a lotus flower that also then depicts flames, symbolising the energy of the Kundalini shakti. With a vibrant color palette and a plethora of innate symbolism, this painting encapsulates the essence of energy that drives the human body.
