About the Artwork +
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of a desert, as master artist Vasant Manubhai Chitara transports you through his colorful Mata ni Pachedi canvas. This exquisite painting by the master artist celebrates the boundless beauty of nature in all its forms. The composition is a harmonious blend of aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic life, with the central section portraying a lush forest landscape. A variety of trees and plants, some adorned with colorful foliage, bring the scene to life with richness and diversity. Among the many animals depicted, two black dogs with white detailing stand out. They are the vahanas of Hadkai Mata, the revered healing goddess associated with protection from disease, particularly rabies. Nearby, graceful herds of deer and bright yellow leopards with spotted coats roam the forest. White lions exude a regal presence, while wild rhinos and boars, painted in hues of blue and white march with quiet power. Camels in warm browns and a white horse, both similarly decorated, add to the splendor of the landscape. Peacocks are seen with their elegant feathers, while monkeys swing playfully among the trees, and serpents are seen slithering across the earth or emerging from their homes. A family of black elephants, draped in embellished caparisons, wades through a calm blue river, its surface delicately dotted in white. The river is full of life, home to colorful fish, turtles, and a lurking crocodile, all meticulously painted in shades of green, red, blue and yellow, outlined in black with fine detailing that brings each creature to life. Above, the sky unfolds in soft blue clouds that part to reveal a radiant sun, its human face glowing warmly as yellow and orange rays stretch across the horizon. The entire scene is set against a soft light brown background, providing the perfect base to highlight the vivid palette and intricate designs that define the painting. Through this richly detailed and vibrant painting, Sanjay Chitara offers more than just a visual delight, he upholds the sacred artistic legacy of the Vaghri community. His work symbolises the interconnectedness of all beings, a reflection of nature’s deep ties to both the divine and human realms, which is a central theme used in the Mata ni Pachedi tradition.
