This beautifully crafted leather lampshade by Sindhe Sriramulu is executed in the traditional Tholu Bommalata style and adapts the visual language of shadow puppetry into a luminous contemporary object. At its centre, Lord Krishna plays the flute, surrounded by floral ornamentation, theatrical drapery and a rich arrangement of colour that recalls the storytelling traditions of this historic craft.
Tholu Bommalata is a centuries-old leather art form traditionally associated with Andhra Pradesh’s shadow-puppet theatre. Artisans cut and hand-paint translucent leather to create puppets representing episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Hindu mythological narratives. In this contemporary adaptation, the same techniques are applied to a lampshade, preserving the craft’s vibrant colours, intricate line work and distinctive relationship with light.
The lampshade takes the form of a rectangular trapezoidal lantern, tapering gently towards the top and supported by four slender metallic rods. Its translucent leather surface allows the colours to glow when illuminated from within, recalling the visual effect of puppets held against a light source during traditional performances.
Occupying the centre of the composition is Lord Krishna, gracefully depicted playing the flute. His body is shown frontally, while his face and feet are rendered in profile, creating the characteristic combination of viewpoints found in Tholu Bommalata painting. His blue complexion is articulated through darker blue contours along the face, arms and torso, introducing gentle modelling while preserving the flat, decorative quality of the design.
Krishna wears a yellow dhoti with black-lined folds, a bright green loincloth and a flowing red stole draped across his shoulder. His elaborate crown is topped with a green peacock feather, while a white floral garland, necklaces, earrings, armlets, bracelets, anklets and kamarbandh complete his adornment. Held between both hands, the murli and the curved treatment of his fingers emphasise the graceful, musical character of the figure.
Surrounding Krishna are stylised flowers in green, orange, yellow and red, which fill the composition with a rhythmic decorative pattern. At the base, tufts of green grass and floral forms suggest the pastoral landscape of Vrindavan. Above, richly coloured curtains arranged in scalloped swags create a theatrical proscenium, recalling the performative origins of Tholu Bommalata and presenting Krishna as the central figure of a sacred visual narrative.
Decorative linear bands frame the upper and lower edges of the lampshade, while concentric outlines and floral borders anchor the base. When illuminated, the translucent leather allows the colours and contours to radiate with clarity, transforming the object into both a source of light and a contemporary expression of Andhra Pradesh’s leather-painting heritage.
