About the Artwork +
This striking composition in Sikki grass work by Suraj Kumar Sahu captures the iconic form of Lord Shiva. Sikki grass craft is a unique, ancient folk art form practiced primarily by women artisans in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. The craft utilizes the wild, golden-hued Sikki grass (Saccharum bengalense), which grows abundantly in local swampy riverbeds and is harvested annually after the monsoons. The process involves drying the stalks, splitting them with a traditional iron needle (takua), and color-dyeing sections before weaving or appliqueing them onto a sturdy, flat base cloth or frame. Celebrated for its natural metallic luster and durability, the art form serves as an important repository of regional mythology and domestic ritual expression, translating complex scriptural iconography into tactile geometric folk textures.
At the center of the composition is Lord Shiva, seated in a Padmasana posture. His radiant face farmed by matted locks (jata), showcases his third eye. His head is adorned with a crescent moon, with the sacred serpent Vasuki around his neck, acting as a profound symbol of Shiva's absolute mastery over fear, death and the deadliest forces of the material universe. To his right stands the monumental trishul (trident) wrapped with a damru (hourglass drum), which carry immense theological significance; the three prongs of the trishul denote the governance over the three gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas) and the cosmic cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction, while the rhythmic beats of the damru signify the primal sound waves (Nada) that birthed the universe. Flanking him to his left is his loyal vahana, Nandi the bull, representing unyielding devotion, righteousness (dharma), and moral strength. Shiva is garbed in a tiger skin loin cloth, a traditional attribute signifying his victory over animalistic passions and his ascetic detachment from worldly desires. Near his crossed feet sits his traditional water goblet (kamandalu), explicitly detailed with a sacred "Om" marking, which underscores his role as the source of all cosmic sound and spiritual purification.
The entire figure is framed by a grand, radiating celestial halo built out of finely layered golden grass strands that pierce a dark, high-contrast background.
