About the Artwork +

This Kalamkari painting by artist Ghanshyam Sarode is a striking devotional work in the Srikalahasti style, depicting the goddess Durga as Mahishasura Mardini. True to the Srikalahasti tradition, every detail—from the intricate jewelry to the fine stippling on the background—is hand-drawn using a bamboo "kalam" (pen) on cotton fabric. The goddess is portrayed in a powerful, multi-armed stance, seated regally upon her mount, the lion, and holding various sacred weapons including a trident, sword, bow, arrow, chakra and conch. Her form is adorned with elaborate necklaces, bangles and a towering crown, all rendered with the meticulous line work characteristic of South Indian temple art.

Moving away from a simple monochrome look, the color palette is rich and symbolic, utilizing deep madder red, ochre yellow, and sky blue. The goddess is set against a vibrant red background, framed by a scalloped arch that suggests a temple sanctum. The upper corners of the composition are filled with a light blue celestial field decorated with floral rosettes. The lion mount is rendered in a warm, stippled ochre, its muscular form defined by bold calligraphic outlines that give it a sense of dynamic presence. These natural vegetable dyes are fixed onto the fabric through a traditional process involving milk and myrobalan, which gives the textile its signature antique cream tone.

The entire composition is enclosed within a formal double border that reinforces its sacred nature. The inner border features a rhythmic sequence of circular medallions in blue and yellow, while the outer edge is finished with a simple golden-yellow band. This structured framing contrasts beautifully with the stippled "dot" pattern that fills the background, a technique used to provide texture and depth to the flat surface. By capturing the goddess in this fierce yet poised manifestation, Ghanshyam Sarode continues the long tradition of using Kalamkari as a medium for divine storytelling and temple decoration.

Please note that all our Kalamkari wall hangings are completely hand-drawn and hand-painted using natural dyes. Because of the handmade process, the final piece may have slight variations in colours, motifs, and detailing compared to the reference image shared.

These small differences are a natural part of the Kalamkari craft and make each artwork unique and original. We assure you that the overall design, theme, and aesthetic will closely follow the approved reference.

By confirming the order, you acknowledge and accept these natural variations that are inherent to handmade art.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
