About the Artwork +

Embark on a visual journey through the enchanting world of Kalighat Pattachitra, as artist Manoranjan Chitrakar skillfully unveils the mesmerizing beauty of Maa Laxmi with Blossoming Lotus, seated gracefully on her revered vahana, the Owl. This captivating hand-painted masterpiece on paper transports you to the heartland of Bengal, where the artform originated. Kalighat Pattachitra, a traditional folk art of West Bengal, breathes life into mythological tales and deities through vivid hues and intricate details. In this artwork, vibrant strokes of vermilion, cobalt blue, and golden saffron create a tapestry of divine energy, evoking a sense of prosperity and spiritual abundance. Every element within the painting speaks volumes about the art form's rich heritage. The Blossoming Lotus, a symbol of purity and enlightenment, blooms gracefully at the feet of Maa Laxmi, embodying her divine grace and auspicious blessings. The presence of the Owl, her loyal companion, adds an element of mysticism, highlighting Maa Laxmi's association with wisdom and intuition. This remarkable masterpiece captures the essence of Maa Laxmi's benevolence, guiding us towards prosperity and abundance. The fusion of divine symbolism, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns showcases the sheer brilliance of Kalighat Pattachitra, a celebrated art form that narrates stories, preserves tradition, and stirs the soul.

Manoranjan Chitrakar blue-tick

Manoranjan
"In West Bengal, the word chitrakar refers to pattachitra painters. We have taken Chitrakar as our last name for hundreds of years" says Manoranjan aka Manu Chitrakar, who has been painting for 30 years since the age of 15. He enjoys depicting societal themes in his works. Manuji has travelled across India, as well as to Sweden and Paris. The Bengal Pattachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by West Bengal's Patuas or Chitrakars. Patua painters, who are Muslim by faith, represent a distinct and secular art history. They make a living by painting and singing stories from Hindu mythology, local folklore, Sufi tradition, and modern issues. Though the origins of the Patua tradition have been difficult for art historians to trace, some suggest the oral form dates back to the 10th or 11th century CE. The physical evidence of a scroll, on the other hand, does not occur until the 18th century CE.
