About the Artwork +
Rooted in the storytelling traditions of the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, this painting brings together two important beings of water, the turtle and the fish, both long associated with continuity, protection, movement and life itself.
In Gond art, animals are rarely painted as isolated creatures; they exist as part of a shared living world where every form carries memory, rhythm and meaning.
At the centre of the composition is a large turtle, its rounded yellow shell forming the main body of the work. The turtle’s legs and fins extend outward in deep blue, while an orange tail emerges at the back, balancing the warm and cool tones across the painting. Its face is bright yellow with large expressive eyes, outlined boldly in black in the characteristic Gond style. The shell itself is densely filled with fine linear strokes and clustered dot work, traditional Gond surface detailing often created through repetitive patterns inspired by natural textures, movement, seeds, grains, and flowing water.
The closely packed lines create rhythm and movement across the body, while the dotted textures soften the surface and give it a living, breathing quality. Inside the turtle’s shell are two fish arranged in a flowing circular movement, each one positioned so that the head of one moves toward the tail of the other, creating a continuous sense of motion. Their bodies are painted in light blue, contrasted with darker blue heads and tails, and are richly decorated with concentric circles, parallel line work, and repeating ornamental patterns that are central to Gond painting traditions. Their large rounded eyes bring liveliness and alertness to the composition, while the repeated motifs across their bodies create harmony between the creatures.
This painting showcases three of Kailash Pradhan's signature styles, the unique star- shaped pattern, called "Cher Chera", inspired by the Gond community's Cherchera festival; Parsa Paan pattern which resembles betel leaves, which are offered as a symbol of respect at significant events like weddings and social gatherings, and are also used in traditional medicine for digestion and respiratory issues amidst the Gond tribe; and the Khaddar pattern, inspired by the fibres of Khadi cotton cloth.
The painting uses a vivid yet earthy palette of yellow, blue, orange, and black, held together through strong outlines and intricate hand-drawn patterning. The circular form of the turtle’s shell becomes more than a physical body, it begins to resemble a contained world of water and life, carrying the fish within it as if protecting an entire flowing ecosystem inside itself.
