About the Artwork +
This magnificent Mata ni Pachedi textile by Vasant Manubhai Chittara is a sophisticated exploration of sacred space, featuring a unique dual-shrine composition set against a sprawling, ethereal background. Utilizing the traditional kalam technique and natural pigments on a rare slate-grey base, the artist creates a bridge between the fierce energy of the Goddess and the tranquil expanse of the natural world.
The artwork is anchored by two prominent architectural sanctums nestled at the base of two towering trees. In the left shrine, Meldi Mata is portrayed in a dynamic pose atop her black goat, her four arms holding ritual attributes that signify her role as a swift protector and the dispeller of obstacles. In the symmetrical shrine to the right, Jogni Mata is seated in a serene yet powerful meditative posture, representing the foundational energy of the divine feminine. Each shrine is topped with an elaborate, tiered dome rendered in the fine, rhythmic linework characteristic of the Mata ni Pachedi tradition.
Between and around these shrines, the composition erupts into a vast, interlocking canopy. Two massive trees rise upward, their branches twisting across the canvas to create a rhythmic, floral lace that teems with life. Small birds and celestial beings are perched throughout the foliage, while at the base, devotees are shown in various poises - some playing instruments, others bearing offerings, celebrating the divine presence. The muted grey background allows the vibrant madder reds and golden ochres of the figures to resonate with a celestial, moonlit quality.
The entire cosmic narrative is enclosed within an extraordinary border of small, arched niches. Each niche contains a different manifestation of the deity, creating a protective gallery that encircles the central scene. This "shrine within a shrine" structure, combined with the intricate floral patterns and microscopic fillers, makes this piece a masterpiece of Vasant Manubhai Chittara’s style. It serves as a visual prayer, inviting the viewer into a world where the divine and the natural are inextricably entwined.
