About the Artwork +

This striking Bhil artwork by Kamlesh Parmar powerfully captures a moment of primal intensity in the eternal dance of predator and prey. At the center of the composition, a fierce orange lion dominates the scene, its form rendered in the signature Bhil style through a rich tapestry of undulating dots in fiery hues of red, orange, and yellow. The lion’s sharp eyes, bared teeth, and poised muscularity convey its raw power as it pounces on its prey—a deep indigo-hued cow, whose body twists beneath the lion’s grip in a depiction of resistance and surrender. The cow, painted in swirling dot patterns of purple and blue, contrasts starkly with the lion’s vibrant form, heightening the visual drama. Surrounding this intense encounter are four striking blue birds, each uniquely poised with beaks touching the fallen cow, perhaps scavengers drawn to the unfolding scene or silent witnesses to the brutal ritual of nature. The birds' smooth, curved forms and rhythmic patterns add an eerie calmness, almost ceremonial, to the moment of chaos. Kamlesh Parmar’s use of color is bold yet harmonious, with the contrasting warm and cool palettes creating a layered emotional tone—ferocity, vulnerability, and inevitability coexisting. The empty background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the dynamic interaction between these creatures, while the dotted textures emphasize the Bhil community’s spiritual connection to nature’s cycles, even those involving death.

Kamlesh
Born in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, on September 10, 1996, Kamlesh Parmar is a Bhil artist currently based in Bhopal. From a young age, Kamlesh was drawn to painting, inspired by the rich artistic traditions of his community. His journey into Bhil art was a natural progression of a childhood hobby, deeply rooted in the stories and people around him. Kamlesh primarily works on canvas and paper sheets, favoring themes that revolve around jungle narratives, trees, and animals. He also beautifully depicts Bhil stories and the daily life of his community, bringing their rich cultural heritage to life through his art. His inspiration is deeply personal, stemming directly from his childhood experiences and the people of his village and community. These foundational influences are what drive him to keep the Bhil art form alive. Despite his passion and talent, Kamlesh faces the common challenge of reaching a wider audience and improving sales for his artwork. Looking ahead, he aspires to achieve a better lifestyle as an artist and dreams of establishing his own Bhil art studio.
