About the Artwork +

This Madhubani painting by artist Pratima Bharti depicts a traditional scene from the Ramayana featuring Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman. Madhubani art is a vibrant folk painting tradition from the Mithila region of India, renowned for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and symbolic depictions of mythology and nature.

At the center of the composition, the divine couple Ram and Sita are seated, with Lakshmana standing beside them. Rama ad Lakshmana are identified by their crowns, traditional attire and bows, while Sita is adorned with intricate jewelry and a patterned ghagra choli with a beautiful green dupatta. All three figures feature the large, almond-shaped eyes and profile-heavy faces central to the Madhubani style. In the lower left corner, Hanuman, the monkey god, is shown, kneeling in a gesture of prayer toward the central figures. His presence completes the "Ram Darbar"(the court of Ram) theme.

The figures are set against a backdrop of densely packed floral motifs in shades of orange. The corners of the piece are filled with red and blue panels featuring white "Kachni" (fine line-filling and small dots) and "Bharni" (solid color-filling, often used in depicting scenes from mythology) techniques.
The entire scene is enclosed in a multi-layered border. It features a row of yellow lotus-like petals and an outer black frame, which creates a sense of formal structure and contains the vibrant patterns of the interior. The use of bright greens, deep blues and vivid reds represents life, divinity and sacrifice. The meticulous linework throughout the clothing and background emphasizes the repetitive, meditative process of the art form.

    Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
